Functional requirements descriptions- which is better "May have" or "Optional"? The mandatory requirements is marked as "Must have".

I'd vote for 'required' and 'optional'

Agreed, required/optional seems clearer to me (and, I suspect, for people where English is not a first language). It is also more consistent with the type of language I normally see in functional requirement documents
